Biography

Azera Graham paints the things that memory refuses to let go of.

Born in the Low Country and raised between a grandmother's kitchen and a public library, Azera came to painting late and completely. She was twenty-four, working in architectural drafting, when she took a life-drawing evening class to fill a quiet winter. She never went back to drafting.

Her training is classical — atelier discipline, limited palettes, the slow build of a head from planes — but her subjects are entirely personal. Houses that were sold. Hours of the day. The gesture of someone holding something they have decided not to give away. She works almost entirely from memory, a practice she describes as “painting the version of a thing that survived, rather than the thing itself.”

Since her first solo showing in 2021 her work has entered private collections across the American South, the United Kingdom and France. She continues to teach, believing that a studio which never opens its door eventually stops learning.

Influences

Vilhelm Hammershøi's empty rooms; Berthe Morisot's refusal to tidy a brushstroke; eighteenth-century French interiors; the blue hour on the Carolina coast; and the colour of light through her grandmother's kitchen window.

Creative Process

Every painting begins written, not drawn — a paragraph in a notebook about what happened. From there Azera builds a ground in a single dominant temperature, then works in thin layers over weeks, often abandoning and returning to a canvas several times. A painting is finished when it stops asking her for anything.
